Whitley County is located in Northeast Indiana, less than 20 miles from both Fort Wayne, the 2nd largest city in Indiana, and Warsaw, the orthopedics capital of the world. Whitley County companies enjoy access to over 50% of the nation's Customer, Industrial and Transportation Manufacturing bases within 600 miles.
Indiana has the lowest business costs and is considered the best state for business in the Midwest. Recently the state has eliminated the inventory tax and capped property taxes, and the state also has tax credits to encourage job creation, capital investment and R&D activities.

The Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) recently received “Best in the Midwest” recognition for the EDC Annual Outlook meeting from the Mid-America Economic Development Council (MAEDC).

The award was announced at MAEDC’s recent 2012 Competitiveness Conference held in Chicago. Award entries were accepted in two markets per category – large market (annual marketing budget over $100,000) and small market (annual marketing budget under $100,000). Submissions were accepted for the categories of: Newsletters, Website, Special Events, Workforce Development, Annual Report, Business Retention & Expansion and Community Promotion and Marketing Program.

Representatives of Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) described in meetings with local officials today the company’s plans to add new rail production capabilities at the Structural Steel and Rail Division that will create approximately 40 new jobs by 2016.
